A search for faces from the modern world showing the ascent is problematic for the simple reason that I/we am/are part of that world  (What does a fish know about water?).  Nevertheless, here are my choices.

	Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, 1892, John Singer Sargent, Scottish National Gallery, is  an oil on canvas portrait painting of Gertrude Agnew. Below is a self portrait of John Singer Sargent. Sargent was dismissed by the art critics of his time, which tells us more about the critics than about the artist and these timeless works.
